The Norman Foundation opens a conversation about its future and reaffirms its commitment to staying together.
In 1998, family members held a discussion about the long-term structure of the foundation, with the goals of increasing family engagement in grantmaking, improving members’ knowledge on issues, and remaining willing to take risks and fund a wide range of issues and approaches. One option proposed was to divide the foundation’s assets in half — one portion remaining with Norman’s general fund, the other distributed among individual family funds. For most committee members, however, this was seen as a last resort; the family preferred to keep the grants budget intact so that the foundation could continue to support high impact organizations and emerging projects.
