About The Norman Foundation

Vision

The Norman Foundation envisions a future where all people live with dignity and self-determination.

Mission

The Norman Foundation supports social justice movements that build power among people most impacted by social inequality.

Guiding Principles

• Dignity and Self-Determination: We believe in the dignity of all people and that everyone should have agency in their lives. We support organizations that advance community-driven solutions and amplify the voices of those who have been historically and systematically excluded from decision-making processes.

• Systemic Change: All people deserve to live in healthy, safe, and thriving communities. We support community-led organizations that seek to transform systems that disproportionately harm low-income people and people of color and address the root causes of pressing issues including mass incarceration, pollution, unaffordable housing, wage disparity, and voter suppression.

• Risk-taking and Innovation: We fund organizations that are early in their development or that are creating new strategies and tactics to advance social change. We understand that organizations must adapt to changing societal conditions and require sustained resources for experimentation and innovation.

• Movement Building: We support efforts to build a strong ecosystem of interconnected organizations that can fuel social justice movements and shift power and resources to marginalized communities. Movement building organizations that utilize a range of strategies – civic engagement, grassroots organizing, research, technology, art – strengthen people’s individual and collective agency to affect change.

• Leadership Development: We invest in organizations that build pathways for community members to become changemakers, advocates, and leaders. Effective social justice leaders build impactful organizations that collectively strengthen movements to bring about lasting change that benefits everyone.
